One of the most popular characters in the long-lasting Marvel Cinematic Universe is Thor, the son of Odin and protector of Asguard. Originally debuting in 2011 as part of Phase One of the MCU, he was portrayed by Chris Hemsworth and fans instantly fell in love with his character and story. However its 2013 sequel, Thor: The Dark World, left much to be desired.
In 2017 leading up to Avengers: Infinity War, the wildly popular Thor: Ragnarok was released with writer/director Taika Waititi at the helm. Due to that film’s reception, Waititi was brought back to direct the next installment, 2022’s Thor: Love & Thunder. That film, however, received a rather mixed reaction from fans and it quickly became one of the lowest-rated MCU films to date.
Following the disappointment, rumors began spreading that Waititi would no longer be involved with the franchise. This didn’t help when actor Chris Hemsworth stated that he no longer wished to work with “mad genius directors” going forward.
Now, in a recent interview with Business Insider, Waititi responded to the claims that Thor 5 was in development at Marvel and that he wouldn’t be attached to direct.Â
“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved, I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.“
Waititi is currently involved with many in-development projects, such as an untitled Star Wars film and a live-action adaptation of Akira. With the amount of projects he is working on, he most likely wouldn’t be able to clear his schedule. However, he doesn’t seem bothered by that. He continued:
“I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.“
Whatever the future holds, hopefully, if there ever is a fifth Thor film, it will be better than the last one.
