New Menu Items at Skipper’s Canteen

Finding a good meal in Magic Kingdom offers many challenges. The counter service options offer very few great choices. The most popular table service places at Magic Kingdom cost a high amount even for theme park dining. Despite the higher price points, the food quality of the top three most searched for dining reservation get criticism for food quality.

So, what should someone do for quality food when visiting Magic Kingdom? The best answer would be taking the monorail to one of the excellent dining options at the monorail resorts. Of course, that may be impractical. I will experience this dilemma during an upcoming trip. If so, I suggest a visit to Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen or “Skipper’s Canteen” for short.

If you are a fan of this place, I might have some bad news. The restaurant with the most known “secret menu item” ever (Brazilian Cheese Bread) has been telling guests for several weeks that the menu will be changing. The most rumored changes involved a popular menu item, Perkins Thai Noodles. This noodle dish offered guests a plant-based option.

Perkins Thai Noodles

Recently, the menu changed slightly at “Skipper Canteen.” Though the changes appear to be only two items. As someone who does not eat much in Magic Kingdom, I may have missed a change in fairness. However, the Perkins Thai Noodles disappeared from the menu. This eliminates one of the two plant-based entrée options here. Plant based diners only have the “Curried Vegetable Crew Stew” left in the entrée section of the menu. In addition, the “Senegali Sal’s Short Rib” left the menu here.

Those items got replaced with a different noodle dish and lamb chops. A dish gaining popularity in the Orlando area theme parks known as “Dan Dan Noodles” replaces the “Perkins Thai Noodles.” A version of Dan Dan noodles started being sold in May at Confiscos Grille over at Islands of Adventure. That menu item gained status to become a permanent menu item there now. At Magic Kingdom, the noodles will be called “Skipper Dan’s Dan Dan Noodles.” I will enjoy asking my server to say that five times quickly during my next trip. Those noodles cost $26. So, the price for a noddle dish here remained the same. Since this is “Skipper Canteen”, I trust that many Skipper Dan corny jokes will be told. Hopefully, it will turn into a visit to Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company.

The other new menu comes with a thematically appropriate name. Yet, I doubt this will appeal to many people. I sometimes wonder who decides what sounds good in theme park marketing teams. The Baa Baa Lamb Chops cost $38. I will be tracking the popularity of these since I think the name will scare people away. Of course, maybe the price will also. The menu description reads “Spice-rubbed Lamb Chops, Chermoula, Cauliflower, Potatoes, Cipollini Onions, and Harissa Sauce, garnished with Preserved Lemons and Herbs.”

If you were a fan of the Perkins Thai Noodles, I send my condolences. I know from guest reports that those noodles were popular. If you plan to dine at “Skipper Canteen”, I hope your preferred items still exist. If you select a plant-based diet, your choices shrank. Yet, the appetizer menu offers a great plant-based option here.

As always, eat like you mean it!
