WOTC Teams Up With Marvel And Fans Aren’t Happy

Wizards of the Coast has definitely seen better days. Over the various “controversies” surrounding Dungeons & Dragons and the over reliance on Magic the Gathering hasn’t been sitting too well with fans. Not to mention the backlash to their Lord of the Rings themed Magic decks. Things have gotten so bad for their flagship card game that multiple unsellable decks have been turning up in landfills.

Now in an attempt to try and go after a new market, WOTC has announced that they are teaming up with the world of Marvel Comics in “A collaboration years in the making“.

While the release is currently “coming soon” it isn’t known what approach they will take with the characters. Will they follow a more classic portrayal or will they try a more “modern” approach? Or will they base it on the characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It is too early to tell.

A press release via Wizards of the Coast said:

Titans of entertainment found in stores worldwide, Magic: The Gathering—one of the world’s most popular trading card games—and Marvel—one of the world’s most prominent character-based entertainment companies—are collaborating to share fan-favorite Super Heroes, villains, and more through amazing tabletop gameplay.

However, despite trying to drum up the “hype train” for the collaboration fans have expressed their anger (largely caused by most of the recent controversies) by down voting the reveal trailer on YouTube. As of this writing the trailer has 2.2K Likes to 4.7K Dislikes.

A number of the comments on the video express the dislike of seemingly constant crossovers with other IP as opposed to more original cards and stories. Magic has crossed over with franchises like Transformers, Stranger Things, Godzilla, Warhammer 40K, My Little Pony and will be crossing over with Doctor Who soon.
