Award shows have gone from a prestigious civilized gathering, with high level individuals from across the entertainment industry, into a circus. Less and less people seem to even care about award shows and even fewer watch them while they’re being presented. So much so that for the first time in years the Golden Globes weren’t broadcast on television this year.
Now we have an event that is definitely dividing people further. It happened during the recent 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
Actor and comedian Chris Rock was presenting an award and he made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith: “Jada I love you, ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it“.
Jade Pinkett-Smith has alopecia, a disorder of the amuse system causing her hair to fall out.
This joke clearly offended her husband, Will Smith, so much so that he walked up to Chris Rock and smacked him across the face.
Chris awkwardly then said “Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me“.
Will Smith then sat back down and yelled “Leave my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!”
This incident spread like wildfire on social media with “The Slap” trending and people saying that Will was going to be arrested. But now it appears that Chris Rock will NOT be filing assault charges. This incident also made Will Smith’s acceptance speech for winning “Best Actor” extremely awkward for both viewers and the audience.
This incident is not the first “misfire” that the academy awards had. In 2017 when presenting “Best Picture” the award was given to La La Land and immediately it was realized a mistake and that Moonlight was the actual winner.
With Chris Rock not fling charges against Smith many people are calling this event staged just to get The Oscars trending on social media, as they seem desperate enough to stage an event to get people talking. But if this incident was indeed real then it just proves the hypocrisy that most Hollywood Celebrities have in thinking they can do and say whatever they want without consequence.
Though Smith’s act did indeed violate the Academy’s Code of Conduct some believe Smith will have is Oscar taken away. The Academy even posted a tweet condemning the act:
The Academy does not condone violence of any form.
Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.

But some think he will keep it, further proving that this event was either staged or that the Academy is full of hypocrites.
