The Walt Disney Company Posts Statement About Repealing Florida Legislation

The Walt Disney Company has just posted a statement in regards to Florida’s HB 1557 nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill being signed by governor Ron DeSantis today.

Disney seems to be going against their apolitical stance and doubling down against the bill. Vowing to repeal the bill in Florida.

Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” the statement reads. “Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.

Whether one is for or against the bill, it’s not up to a corporation to determine legislature. That aside, it seems like damage control after all the media and social media backlash the company faced over Florida politics because they gave money to people behind the bill and to those that voted against the bill, which the media seems to leave out.

Of course Twitter melted down on both sides of the argument.

At this point Disney’s involvement seems a little late for many. It come across as simply damage control and saving face to the media and employees that are complaining, mostly in California.

Now Disney says it is going to actively try to control legislation and put money from their customers and investors into “national and state organizations to achieve that.”

Pandora’s box has been opened and no matter what Disney does they are going to have to deal with angry people.
