File this one under rumor for now, but according to Giant Freakin Robot, there is rumored to be a live-action adaptation of ‘Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire,’ written by Steve Perry, coming sometime down the road.
‘Shadows the Empire’ was the “multi-media” event that Disney is going for today. The book came out in the 1990’s and it led to successful comic books, a video game and toys.
In this story readers learned about the time between ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi.’
What was cool about it was that it followed Leia, Lando and Chewie on their quest to find Han Solo where they work with fan favorite mercenary Dash Rendar. Another story thread involved a character named Xizor. He is from the crime syndicate Black Sun and plots to team up with Darth Vader to get Luke, while also planning to stab Vader in the back.
The story is part of the old “Expanded Universe” now “Legends” series that Disney threw out when they started to create their Star Wars universe. It was a huge deal back in the day. Many people still talk about it. So if Disney would go there it could be a well played move, if done correctly, but I’m not sure how they can do this after they’ve changed the time line so much.
Now Giant Freakin Robot is claiming that there are plans for a live-action movie
“It looks like there is now a Shadows of the Empire live-action movie in development. This is just another example of an unseen part of the Stars Wars timeline getting full run.”
They are also saying that there is a Jedi Academy series in the works as well, which would make sense given that they pushed Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Master again in ‘The Book of Boba Fett.’
They did have Dash Rendar’s ship ‘The Outrider’ in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, which also lends a bit of credence to this rumor.
Lucasfilm has been doing more with adding in crime syndicates as well, so that could also play in.
Of course this is all rumor and speculation at this point. But it isn’t the first time I’ve heard about the possibility with ‘Shadows of the Empire.’ While most people would have liked to see the Timothy Zahn Thrawn trilogy– ‘Heir to the Empire,’ ‘Dark Force Rising,’ and ‘The Last Command’ come in as live-action films or shows, ‘Shadows of the Empire’ was another one that a lot of people thought would be a good one to add to the roster.
If Disney wants to go all in with the old characters I’m for it, as long as they don’t give them the horrible sequel trilogy treatment. If they’re going to do that they should stop while they’re ahead.
Time will tell if any of it is true and/ or they mess it up.
