RUMOR: Jim Jinkins Is Developing A ‘Doug’ Sequel Series?

ATTENTION: THE FOLLOWING REPORT IS A RUMOR. PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING REPORT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

The 1990s were full of classic cartoons that have stayed in the minds of those who grew up with them for decades. So much so that many have had a spin-off, sequel series, or full on reboot for a modern audience. One series in particular is remembered for its bizarre visuals and relatable characters, that series being Doug.

Originally aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 – 1993 before being picked up by Disney and aired on ABC from 1996 – 1999 and ended with a theatrical film the year of its final season. Despite being gone it is still remembered fondly.

Now nearly 25 years after its cancelation it appears that a new chapter in the Doug story is being written, and it involves the series’ original creator Jim Jinkins.

Months ago Jim was on a podcast with Tenn Buick and revealed what he would like to do in a Doug follow-up series. He said:

Here’s what I wish would happen. Doug turns 33 years old this year, something like that, so if you think about that, the fans of Doug have grown up. Maybe some of them have gotten married. Maybe some of them have kids. So, the idea of bringing Doug back now, I think has real power in it.

The images he then showed was a concept called Doug Kids and would follow Yancey and Doug Jr., the children of Doug and his crush Patti Mayonnaise. The idea would be to have the children be the new main characters while many of the original characters still being present mirroring how the original fans are now much older and have kids of their own.

While this seres wasn’t confirmed then, a recent report via The DisInsider seemed to imply that it was officially being developed for Disney+. The report was then quickly spread online and has been spread across multiple outlets, with many fans assuming it is a reality.

However, nothing has been stated by either Jinkins or Disney themselves, so it’s still up in the air if something does ever happen.

Despite this, it is still nice to see that Jinkins still has passion for the characters and story. Hopefully, someday we will get to see something come from this.

What do you think? Would you like to see a sequel to Doug?
