Official Disney Look At the Galactic Starcruiser “Sensory” Experiences Focused on Food

Now that all the approved media have started releasing their images from the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, Disney is going to release some of theirs. They are tying the dining offerings to the senses, but I think they’re shortchanging the actual sensory experiences by doing so.

Let’s take a look!

Taste

The chefs that created dishes that had “familiar tastes with new and unexpected textures.”

I’ll give them this sense with the food. Taste, Smell and Sight.

Sight

The Crown of Corellia Dining Room onboard the starcruiser is a feast for the eyes. Here you dine beneath three large circular, multi-layered chandeliers complemented by a dazzling lighting display throughout the supper club. The lights go full-on concert mode when Gaya, the galactic superstar from the planet Ryloth, performs her biggest hits during the first night’s dinner. Then the next night the lighting changes colors to evoke the aesthetics of each course during a “Taste Around the Galaxy.”

I’m going to interject. From what I’ve seen it’s neat, but not that impressive. It also seems rather small.

The show with Gaya is lacking as Disney could have used this opportunity to bring in special effects, animatronics, and more. It’s now just dinner and a show.

Sound

“Oh, did I mention Gaya? She is, in a word, stunning. The Twi’lek singer glides effortlessly past the tables as her powerful voice fills every nook and cranny of the room. If you listen closely, though, you may learn more about the galaxy – and why Gaya is on this ship to begin with.”

Again, this isn’t that impressive. I do think sound is important though.
As I mentioned in another article, the ride up to the Halcyon is made much more exiting when the sound and music is added. So I do think sound is important, but it’s when familiar music, sounds like lightsaber humming, and more come into play. Disney needs to lean in more on what people know and can relate to because that’s what works.

Smell

I don’t know if I had an expectation for what dining in a galaxy far, far away is supposed to smell like … but this is it. Every meal brings its own tantalizing aroma that will have your mouth watering before you take the first bite.

So food. It smells like food.
It would be neat if they piped in scents like they do on Main Street U.S.A. Maybe ozone scent when lightsabers are going or some unusual scents associated with various aliens around the ship.

Touch

Again, it’s about food and beverages with Disney.

The Sublight Lounge offers great nightcap options after a fantastic dinner, like the Hoth Ice Breaker pictured here. These drinks hit on multiple senses with exotic flavors and photo-worthy looks. But one thing that really sets them apart is the glassware, which just feels cool to hold. It’s a small detail, but so important when creating an immersive experience that makes you feel like you’ve traveled to another galaxy.

I think they should focus on touch in the way it actually, physically means. People are touching the keypads, control boards, Sabbac cards, lightsabers, and more. Disney isn’t doing itself any favors by boiling it all down to just food and dining options when they talk about the senses being involved. There are many options for touch to be involved.

It’s already a hard sell based on the price and the time period they chose in the Star Wars timeline. Disney, you might want to play up your angles more than just “food.” You need to showcase what you did put in, because you sure missed a lot of opportunities for the price tag.
