Before the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series released on Disney Plus one of the biggest concerns from fans was over continuity. Early on Lucasfilm head, Kathleen Kennedy, stated that this show would give audiences the rematch between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. The two hadn’t seen each other since Revenge of the Sith, meaning it would have been a while since they fought. But there’s just one issue for some fans, that seems to go against the series’ continuity.



In A New Hope when an older Obi-Wan and Darth Vader meet on the Death Star Vader stated “When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master”, heavily implying that these two hadn’t met since their battle on the volcanic planet of Mustafar.



But in the most recent episode of the spin-off television series we see Vader and Obi-Wan cross blades, meaning that continuity has now been altered to service the series.

Recently speaking with The Hollywood Reporter series writer, Joby Harold, spoke as to why the decision as made to change the continuity:

“It was much the opposite. There was no line in A New Hope that said we couldn’t. One could argue that Obi-Wan’s ‘from a certain point of view’ thing is obviously revisionist storytelling in regards to the original trilogy, or it’s another way of saying there are gray areas and things we don’t know. There’s nothing wrong with uncovering the past and its truths in storytelling, so it never felt wrong to me. There’s nothing that I feel like we’ve violated at all. If anything, we’ve informed those scenes so that some of the choices that we’ve taken for granted in the original trilogy actually make more sense now. If you came to the entire Star Wars storytelling world fresh and watched it all the way through from Episode I, this would feel like a natural link between those two trilogies.“

So their excuse for revising the Star Wars continuity was because they were “uncovering the past and its truths”? That doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why not just admit it and say “because we wanted to”? Because that’s definitely how it looks.

This isn’t the first time Star Wars canon was changed. The Old Republic was mentioned in the Prequel films but those stories were wiped clean throughout the Disney buyout and were replaced by the High Republic.

Who knows how much of this was originally planned and how much of this was from the second draft of the show after Kathleen Kennedy completely scrapped it and changed the writer? But by the sounds of it it seems that at least this decision was the new writer’s and approved by Kennedy herself.

Like the writer said you can’t take anything for granted anymore under Disney. To them it’s just a way to make more product no matter what they have to change. If current Lucasfilm doesn’t seem to care for continuity then why should we?
