It is no secret that the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels isn’t doing too well at the box office. The 2019 film Captain Marvel which reportedly made over $1.1 Billion at the box office, its sequel has been rapidly declining in ticket sales becoming the worst drop-off for a Marvel film in history.Â
However, despite the box office woes, Marvel still seems to be trying to save this film by overhauling the marketing machine, even running ads claiming that it is the “Number one movie in America.” Now in what feels like an April Fool’s Day joke, Marvel has just released a new alternative trailer for the film titled “The Mewovels“.
The video shows the many lead protagonists of the film replaced with cats doing typical cat things.
We have Captain Meowvel
Ms. Meowvel
Meownica Rambeau (What? No Furton?)
And finally… Nick Furry
This trailer, while humorous, does show signs of desperation as they are trying to appeal to the moms who watch cat videos on Facebook and/or Instagram. What’s funny is that this parody looks like it could be a better movie.
It feels like someone at Marvel marketing decided to use a Marvel filter on their phone and record their cats wearing superhero outfits and decided, “Let’s use this.” Despite the attempt, audiences don’t seem at all interested as the like to dislike ratio currently sits at 2/3 likes versus 1/3 dislikes.Â
The film currently sits at $164.2 Million worldwide but had a net budget of $219.8 Million. While the film could still reach that number by the end of its run, the large quantity of marketing behind the film could lead to Marvel losing over $100 Million overall.
What are your opinions on this latest marketing tactic? Will it bring people back to theaters? Or will the film still crash and burn?Â
