Disney’s Gargoyles live again… action figure form, that is!

NECA, manufacturer of highly-detailed yet surprisingly affordable action figures, shocked the action figure world yesterday with the revelation that they hold the license to produce figures based on Disney’s fan-favorite 90’s cartoon franchise, Gargoyles.

Created by Greg Weisman, Gargoyles is an American animated television series produced by the Walt Disney Company, originally airing from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997. The series centered around a species of nocturnal creatures known as Gargoyles; stone by day, warriors by night. After spending 1,000 years in an enchanted petrified state, they awaken to find themselves no longer in medieval Scotland, but transported to modern-day New York City. Under the leadership of the noble Goliath, they reestablish themselves as mankind’s secret nighttime protectors.

Noted for it’s distinct dark tone and complex storytelling, Gargoyles struck a mature tone not often seen in the cartoons of the day. Gargoyles spun off into video game adaptations and comic series, with the most recent continuation of the show’s storyline in a comic book series that ran from 2006 to 2009, written by creator Greg Weisman and published by Slave Labor Graphics.

A long-time favorite of Disney fanatics and animation fans in general, NECA’s reveal of this incredible Goliath action figure is sure to send the legions of collectors hungry for Gargoyles merchandise to the ATM to throw money at the company. We fully expect this is not the end of Gargoyles’ resurgence into popular culture. Although not yet stated, we can’t imagine a world where NECA doesn’t plan to release as many of the beloved characters as possible. (And stone variants, of course.)
