In 2014 WWE (Formerly known as WWF) created the WWE Network Streaming Service where fans of WWE, WCW, ECW and more can watch/stream classic Pay-Per-View events as well as all new PPVs without having to spend the usual $50. All it cost was $9.99 a month and the service lasted until 2021 when it was announced that the North American version merged with NBCUniversal’s Peacock service while most of the world was still able to access the service directly. But now WWE is continuing to consolidate their service by merging their Indonesian broadcasts with the House of Mouse.
It was announced that Disney and WWE have reached a deal to stream WWE content and PPVs on the Disney+ Hotstar service. Beginning January 30th in Indonesia you will be able to tune in for the 35th Annual Royal Tumble PPV event through the magic of Disney.
This is somewhat an interesting combination. The last time Disney had any major relationship with pro wrestling was a brief stint with WCW in the mid 90s where shows were held at Disney-MGM Studios. One notable moment during their stay included Hulk Hogan parading down the street to ceremoniously sign his WCW contract.
Many believe that this is just the first in a number of other possible deals with the Walt Disney company. Since NBCUniversal’s Peacock is only available in North America and the UK/Ireland it means that Disney could swoop in and sign deals for more regions across the globe. WWE has reportedly been unhappy with their deal with Peacock, so when their deal comes up for renewal WWE may decide to let it expire and sign with ESPN+, with whom they were originally expected to sign with.
It has been rumored for sometime in the Pro Wrestling community that WWE’s owner Vince McMahon has been looking to sell the company instead of willing it to either his son Shane or his son-in-law Paul Levesque AKA Triple H. WWE President Nick Khan has supposedly been speaking with potential buyers and is also being blamed for the staggering amount of talent releases over the past year and a half. One of their more controversial releases from last year with superstar Bray Wyatt soured their relationship with Fox Sports.
Disney isn’t expected to buy WWE, but they perhaps may seek a long term deal with cross promotions.Â
