Disney+ has been working on a new ‘Willow’ series for Disney+. Originally ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Director Jon Chu was to be the director on the new series. However, production delays due to the pandemic caused him to have to “bow out” of the position.
Disney has now hired Jonathan Entwistle known for “I Am Not Okay with This” to direct the pilot episode, and to be an executive producer on the upcoming show.
Entwistle offered this statement:
“With its epic world of swords, sorcery and adventure, Willow captivated and influenced so many. I’m excited to be going on this journey and working with Jon and Wendy to create something that is both deeply rooted in that original film and also a fresh, funny and charming addition to the beloved story. To be able to play within the world so painstakingly crafted by Ron back in ’88 is a dream come true for me.”
The new series will be a sequel series to the original 1988 film and Warwick Davis is returning to play Willow. The co-showrunners on the series are Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle.
Currently the expectation is that the show will debut on Disney+ in 2022, but that could all change.
