Disney Is Dipping Back Into the Descendants Franchise With Animated ‘Descendants: The Royal Wedding’

It looks like Disney isn’t going to let the ‘Descendants’ franchise ride off into the sunset just yet. According to Variety, the Disney Channel will be getting an animated special  “Descendants: The Royal Wedding” that will debut this summer.

This special will feature Mal and Ben’s wedding. Disney is getting a bunch of the original actors back: Dove Cameron (Mal,) Mitchell Hope (Ben,) Sofia Carson (Evie,) Booboo Steward (Jay,) Sarah Jeffery (Audrey,) China Anne McClain (Uma,) Jedidiah Goodacre (Chad,) Anna Cathcart (Dizzy,) and more.

In a move that I think is both appropriate and considerate they will not be recasting Carlos, played by Cameron Boyce.  However they will acknowledge his “absence in the storyline and Boyce’s memory will be honored in the telecast.”

Disney knows they have a winner with the franchise and they aren’t so quick to let it go. Right now they need all the leverage they can get to pull out of their pandemic hit. Since they are focused on direct-to-consumer this would fit the bill.

The new special will be produced by Le Cube and will be directed by Salvador Simó.

Hopefully it will be as popular as the films were, but I don’t know if that will be the case as the animated shorts didn’t seem to get the same love that the movies did. I’m also concerned about the studio’s animation “style” for this project, but we shall see.

What do you think? Comment and let us know.
