Ever since the film was announced at Disney’s 2020 Investor’s meeting the Toy Story spin-off film Lightyear has left many people wondering what the film will be about. Not much was given in the initial reveal other than the title and a glimpse of what Buzz will look like. Today we’re gonna go over what we do know and what we could potentially see.
The film will dive into the origins of Buzz Lightyear.
Seeing him start off as a Test Pilot as he works his way up to becoming a Space Ranger. Not much besides that has been given about the story but we can assume we’ll see an inexperienced Buzz go up against the Evil Emperor Zurg for the first time and stopping whatever evil plan he may have conceived.
Instead of actor Tim Allen reprising his role for the spin-off film, Pixar has casted Marvel actor Chris Evans, known for playing Captain America, in the role of the galactic hero. This  decision did lead to some fan outcry, with some saying they can never replace Tim Allen. Whether the change is due to scheduling conflicts or a change in direction of the film we don’t know. We will have to wait and see if his performance will be able to do the character justice.
The film will be directed by Angus MacLane. Being with Pixar since A Bug’s Life, he has been an animator on Monster’s Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and most notably animation director on Wall-E and co-director on Finding Dory.
This will be his first film where he is fully in charge. Hopefully he’ll get to spread his wings in this out space adventure.
Though not confirmed, some fans speculate that perhaps characters or story elements from the 2000s animated series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command will appear in this adaptation. Fan favorite characters such as Mira Nova and Warp Darkmatter have been tossed around in these speculations. Again we don’t know if any of this will come true but all we can do is speculate.Â
The film is set for release summer of 2022. It is speculated that this film will be released exclusively on Disney Plus similar to the past few Pixar films.
