Disney-Pixar has released the first full trailer for their upcoming film Turning Red. The film, set in the early 2000s, tells the story of Mei Lee, a smart, confident 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl growing up in Toronto.

Mei seems to have it all together – until she wakes up one morning to find her appearance a little…fuzzy.  Apparently, Mei’s family heritage includes a touch of mystical giant red pandas, and Mei takes on this fluffy form during times of stress or anxiety. The film seeks to highlight the challenges of adolescence, in a soft and amusing fashion.

I have a feeling there will be lots of red plush pandas for sale very soon.

Boy Band fans – rejoice!

Mei Lee seems to have an obsession with Boy Bands, as all the auto-tune, pop band glamour of the turn of the millennium is front and center in Pixar’s newest creation. The film’s teaser trailer, released in July, treated audiences to a sample of the Backstreet Boys’ Larger Than Life.  The full trailer plays amid a backdrop of *NSYNC’s It’s Gonna Be Me. 

Turning Red is the feature film directorial debut of Domee Shi, who previously directed the Pixar short Bao. Newcomer Rosalie Chiang stars as Mei Lee, and Sandra Oh plays Mei’s overprotective mother.

Turning Red is scheduled for a March 11, 2022 release in theaters. As of this article’s release date, there has been no confirmation by Disney regarding a release date for the film on Disney+.
