Disney+ and Lucasfilm On Third Director For Upcoming ‘Willow’ Series In Less Than a Year

Last December, during the Disney Investor Day presentation, it was finally confirmed that a Willow spin-off show would be coming to Disney+. Prior to that it was just rumors and speculation.

Since the announcement, and in about seven months, we’ve had three different director announcements on this project written by Jonathan Kasdan, who is co-showrunning along with Wendy Mericle.

At the time of it’s confirmation director Jon Chu was announced for the highly anticipated show.

That lasted all of about a month until it was announced that Jon Chu was leaving the production due to his families new baby coming and scheduling changes:

I’m heartbroken to let you all know that I unfortunately have to step away from directing Willow.
With the production schedule moving due to continued lockdowns in the UK, and with a new baby coming this summer (surprise!), the timing is just not going to work for me and my family,” Chu wrote in a statement. “As you may know, Willow has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child, so I’m devastated that I won’t be able to work with my heroes old and new like Kathy, Ron, Jon, Wendy, Michelle, and the amazing cast and crew they’ve put together. Like a kid seeing Willow for the first time in the ’80s, I will look forward to watching this magical new world unfold as a very enthusiastic fan…

Then, in late January, 2021, we were told Jonathan Entwistle would be stepping in to take over directorial duties on the series.

With its epic world of swords, sorcery and adventure, Willow captivated and influenced so many. I’m excited to be going on this journey and working with Jon and Wendy to create something that is both deeply rooted in that original film and also a fresh, funny and charming addition to the beloved story. To be able to play within the world so painstakingly crafted by Ron back in ’88 is a dream come true for me.

And now he too has left the production as of April due to his own scheduling conflict with his Apple TV+ series Hello Tomorrow.  After his departure apparently Stephen Woolfenden, who was a producing director on the series stepped in to shoot Episode 1 and 2.

What is up with the “Willow” show? We have had three directors in a handful of months, and Lucasfilm apparently would not comment on the situation.

Right now it seems they have their hands full with the Indiana Jones 5 situation and they aren’t even waiting for Harrison Ford to recover to film that one.

Kathleen Kennedy must be quite stressed out by all these changes and delays.  But at least this time they didn’t say it was due to “creative differences.”

What do you think? Comment and let us know.
