Taika Waititi Is Unsure If His Star Wars Movie Will Ever Get Made

For those who may have forgotten actor and director Taika Waititi, who became well known after his 2017 Marvel film Thor: Ragnarock, was given the chance to make his own Star Wars movie.

Shortly after the project was announced Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated that the film will “Expand into the Star Wars Universe” and not rely on any pre-existing characters or stories, which worried some people.

The New Zealand born filmmaker seemed like a good choice for helming a Star Wars project at first when he directed episode 8 of The Mandalorian, but now it seems that he himself doubts it will make it off the ground.

In a recent interview the director confessed that he still hasn’t finished writing the script for the film and even has doubts it will happen:

I’m trying to write the Star Wars idea at the moment. I’ve got to see how that goes because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.

Lucasfilm has had a number of issues in the past with greenlighting film projects. After the success of The Force Awakens in 2015 Lucasfilm was handing out Star Wars projects left and right like Oprah Winfrey, but were slowed down after the poor reception of films like The Last Jedi, Solo and The Rise of Skywalker.

Numerous directors and projects have been announced by Lucasfilm and disappear almost as soon as they were conceived. Not only were Phil Lord and Chris Miller fired from Solo and Colin Trevorrow fired from Star Wars: Episode IX, but Patty Jenkins “Walked Away” from Rouge Squadron, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss walked away from an entire Trilogy for Netflix and Rian Johnson’s Trilogy was seemingly canceled behind the scenes.

Not to mention multiple other film projects such as Boba Fett and Obi-Wan were turned into Disney Plus series instead.

What do you think? Is Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project doomed to be shelved like so many before?
