Pinocchio is one of Disney’s most popular early films. From the same era of other classics like Snow White, Bambi and Dumbo, it shows a cautionary tale about being responsible and doing the right thing. Funny enough, it appears that three studios believe the story is so good they are releasing new takes on the story all in the same year.

The first one of note is of course the Disney Live Action Remake being made exclusively for the Disney Plus streaming platform. The film stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Tom Hanks and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a recreation of the 1940 classic. Though this version doesn’t seems to have much fan fair behind it when compared to previous Live Action Remakes.

The second film is a stop-motion animated adaptation headed up by award winning director Guillermo del Toro. The project was announced back in 2008, and like most del Toro productions they usually take a while to bring to life. The films stars Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor and David Bradley. The film is being distributed exclusively by Netflix.

The third and final Pinocchio film releasing this year is the now infamous Pinocchio: A True Story. Developed by Russian animation company Luminescence and distributed in America by Lionsgate. The film is a cheaply animated film with a rushed English language dub staring Pauley Shore, Jon Heder and Tom Kenny.

The trailer for the film was released online and became an instant meme and gained over 3 Millions views with people questioning whether or not it was real. The film has sense gathered a cult following in a “so bad it’s good” way, similar to 2003’s The Room.

If you are a fan of the original fairy tale you are sure to get plenty of variety when it comes to adaptations all in the same year.

Which one would you consider watching? or would you prefer just sticking in your DVD copy of the 1940 original?
