It is a pirate’s life indeed as Disney joins forces with Microsoft and Rare to merge Pirates of the Caribbean with Sea of Thieves. Together, the developers and the Mouse are adding new magic to the game. Rescue Jack Sparrow and save the world!
Split across five incredible Tall Tales packed with secrets and side-quests, Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life sees Captain Jack Sparrow sailing in from beyond the horizon to sweep players into an epic new adventure!
I’d brushed off SoT a long time ago because finding friends who’d be willing to put in the hours to make the game worthwhile was tough. Now that the game is well-established and getting a Disney IP injection, naysayers may give it a chance.
Over at Variety, we learned the plan to bring these two franchises together wasn’t a quick turnaround. Rare’s executive producer Joe Neate came clean that this crossover had been in the works for two years, “That first meeting, Mike and I walked out and literally, when we got around the corner — we made sure we were out of eyeshot — we literally put our arms around each other and said, ‘we’re gonna do something special here,’ just from spending 45 minutes in a room with the team at Disney.”
Did everyone see that? Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life launches June 22!

The attention to detail regarding Jack’s inclusion is what is the most intriguing to me. Rare’s creative director Mike Chapman revealed the lengths the team went to to get that genuine feel. The team went so far s to bring in a stunt double who worked with Johnny Depp.
To make sure the character acted as true-to-life as possible, the team would inquire about specific physical movements of Sparrow, “if Jack was gonna say this, what would he be doing with his hands? How would he carry himself? What would his posture be like?”
Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life expansion will set sail on June 22. That’s next Tuesday, folks!
Now, get working with Amazon/MGM and get working on what fans really want … a Cutthroat Island crossover! I am 100% sure that Geena Davis would gladly return to voice Morgan Adams.
What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comments.
