This is why I do not like using my Magic Band or Apple devices to make charges on my card. According to reports from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, a woman had lost her Apple watch on an attraction in EPCOT and then had $40K in fraudulent charges appear on her connected credit cards.
It seems the woman was riding the Seas with Nemo & Friends in EPCOT when she dropped her Apple Hermes watch ($1,300) and it fell through the grated floor and landed in a “pathway below.” It seems that when she couldn’t reach it her husband got off the ride to get it. Which of course shut down the attraction and summoned Cast Members to tell them not to get off the moving ride vehicle.
According to WDWNT, the Cast Member told the guest she could see the watch and it would be returned to their hotel. However, the woman had several cards linked to the watch, including an American Express card with an unlimited credit limit.
As you should do in this situation, the guest went to Guest Relations and filed a report but no one ever turned it in. Then she started to get alerts about fraudulent charges on her card.
The guest then had “several fraud alerts throughout the course of the day on her Amex card. According to the victim, there was approximately $40,000 of fraudulent charges on her card,” the report said.”
Amex will notify you if they feel that the spending is high or unusual.
She did cancel her cards and then filed a report with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on April 14.
“The woman wanted to prosecute whoever rang up the charges and contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to report grand theft, according to the report taken April 14. She was told to research the fraudulent charges so authorities could track where the card was used. Disney Security was also notified.”
How awful. The good news is that Disney has cameras set up all over so perhaps if she is able to find time stamps and locations Disney will be able to match them up and find whomever did this.
$40k spent in one day. It’s Disney and it’s expensive, but that’s still a lot. Probably bought a bunch of items to sell on the internet.
It’s a good lesson to all of us to maybe not link everything to a device that can get lost.
