With Disney Plus Adding Anime Will We See a Kingdom Hearts Series?

One of the biggest categories the Disney Plus streaming service seems to be lacking when compared to other services is of course Anime (Japanese Animation). Though in the past the Walt Disney Company was heavily associated with anime giant Studio Ghibli, however, their partnership has since expired and now their films are currently on HBO Max.

Recently it was announced by Disney that they plan to develop their own exclusive anime series for Disney Plus to try and entice new subscribers who are attracted to that particular genre. Shows like Star Wars: Visions and Twisted Wonderland have been commissioned by Disney for the service. But there is one particular franchise that is co-owned by Disney that many consider would lend itself well to an anime inspired series, and that is Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts is a video game series that began in 2002 on the Playstation 2 and was developed by Squaresoft, now Square Enix. The series is a crossover between various Disney characters and character from Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series. The game follows the main protagonist, Sora, along with his friends Donald and Goofy, as they travel across various worlds all set in classic Disney films from The Little Mermaid, Winnie the Pooh, Tarzan, Alice in Wonderland, The Nightmare Before Christmas and many more.

The concept lends itself well to a episodic adventure, especially since the video game series has had over 10 installments, traveling across various familiar Disney worlds and running into classic characters and stories filled with action, adventure and of course friendship. The series already has a Manga adaptation with multiple volumes.

For years the fanbase has asked for an animated series based on the IP, but to no avail. But with Disney looking to add anime-inspired series to their platform perhaps a partnership between Disney and Square Enix could lead to developing a streaming show, especially with the recent renewed interest with Sora being added into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Hopefully we might see something come from this as Disney continues to diversify their library with new categories and genres. Also if this does happen I know people people want the song “Simple and Clean” as the into theme, but I’d rather have “Sanctuary” from KHII.

Do you think Disney will consider making a Kingdom Hearts Anime? It certainly wouldn’t be as strange as that Lilo & Stitch Anime from a while back.
