Now that Florida’s Governor DeSantis had indicated that Florida and theme parks can now go back to mostly regular operations does that mean we will see the mask rules stop at Walt Disney World?
Honestly, I doubt it, for a couple reasons:
- Disney doesn’t want to scare off potential customers. Their statement about Florida going into Phase 3 basically says masks are still required.
“We received the Governor’s executive order and are evaluating it to determine what it may mean for our business. We are not making any immediate changes. As a reminder, face coverings are still required at Walt Disney World Resort.”
While they supposedly “evaluate” things the capacities have definitely increased, so they must be done evaluating that. But the masks will still be required.
2. Disney will want to keep the mask rule in place to avoid any accusations of COVID-19 exposure. It’s already made clear that if you enter anything the mouse owns you do so voluntarily and waive rights to legal action, but it’s better for plausible deniability if they point out that they packed people in but still tried to enforce masks and physical distancing.
3. Disney has a ton of masks they need to sell. I don’t see the rules changing until they sell a bunch of the masks off. They pledged one million masks, and they reached their goal of the $1 million in profits for donations already.
“Disney is donating one million cloth face masks for children and families in underserved and vulnerable communities across the U.S. that will be distributed by MedShare (www.medshare.org). Due to overwhelming demand, we’re also thrilled to share that we have reached our goal of raising $1 million in profits from the sales of our cloth face masks, which will be donated to MedShare to support the medical community’s ongoing efforts to provide lifesaving care to those in need.”
No word yet on where additional funds are going. If it’s staying with the company I do NOT expect the mask requirements to change anytime soon. Not when they are making so much money on them.
Now that Disney is being sued over the mask requirements, I do have to wonder if they will relax the requirement for those that can’t wear one. It’s already cost them some bad press and legal action. Prior to Stage 3 they weren’t making adaptations, but now they have more leeway to do so. I just don’t know if they want the headaches of some people seeing others not wearing masks and refusing to wear theirs?
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. From where I’m sitting I think we will see mask requirements for awhile, or at least until they can unload a lot of their custom ones. Holiday ones are likely on their way too.
