Why Didn’t Mark Hamill Voice Luke Skywalker in the “LEGO Star Wars: Holiday Special?”

If you watched the “LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special” that was allegedly an “homage” to the cringy-classic “Star Wars Holiday Special” and some of the original cast like Anthony Daniels and Billy De Williams were brought in to play their characters. But apparently Mark Hamill was not.

When he was asked why he was not he had the following response:

I did not play the voice of Luke in the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special because:

A) I didn’t want to risk tarnishing the legendary status of the original.

AND: B) They didn’t ask me to.

#TrueStory

Now to be fair, most of the cast was not played by their live-action actors.

However, Mark Hamill is known for his voice acting. He’s been the voices for many characters and on many different shows. Decades worth of voice acting on cartoon shows and in video games. He’s even done voices for LEGO games before. So it wasn’t a case of he didn’t feel comfortable or he didn’t have the experience or hasn’t worked for LEGO before.

He’s soon going to be voicing Skeletor in the upcoming “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” show.

I guess I’m not surprised they didn’t use Hamill.

A. They are always trying to do things as cheaply as possible.

B. They already caused a huge rift in the fandom with the way they portrayed Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy.

C. Mr. Hamill told EW that he loved playing Luke Skywalker, but Luke is over and he wouldn’t be playing him anymore.

I had a beginning, middle, and end. Those films gave me far more than I ever expected when we started out so it’s never even occurred to me. My farewell was in Episode IX and it was bittersweet. I love all those people and I certainly have affection for George and the character he created. I’m full of gratitude for what it has given me and my career but I don’t want to be greedy. There are still so many more stories to tell and so many great actors to tell them, they don’t need me.

Hopefully this was an oversight and not just a slight, but the way Disney has treated the character of classic Luke Skywalker, my money is on the later.
