**Edited to correct the director’s name**

In 2014 is was announced by Disney that a Live Action film adaptation of the classic Disney Afternoon cartoon Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers was in development. The project was greenlit by Disney after the huge success 20th Century Fox was having with their Alvin and the Chipmunks film series, seeing that they themselves had a property with Talking Chipmunks they of course wanted to capitalize on the talking chipmunk craze.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers was a series about the Mickey Mouse characters Chip and Dale starting a search and rescue squad known as the Rescue Rangers. Chip acts as the group leader, wearing an outfit inspired by Indiana Jones and Dale is the comedy relief member and wears an outfit inspired by Magnum P.I.‘s Thomas Magnum. In addition the brothers are joined by Monterey Jack, a kind hearted Australian mouse who acts as the muscle of the group, Gadget, a brilliant engineer who acts as the brains of the group and Zipper the Fly who sometimes seen as the group’s pet or mascot character. The group helps anyone who calls for their help, be it animal or human. The series was one of the top shows on the Disney Afternoon program block and even received two NES games by CAPCOM.

Now the project had apparently been going through some difficulties in production since the project was announced in 2014 which as of now was seven years ago, quite the delay. Not much is known about why the project has been taking so long but it most likely has to do with the direction of the story and characters. Only within the last two years has any apparent progress been made when in 2019 it was announced that Akiva Schaffer, member of The Lonely Island comedy group, will direct the film replacing the previous director/writer, Robert Rugen. The film will star comedian John Mulaney as Chip and fellow Lonely Island member Andy Samberg as Dale. Filming finally began on March 16th of this year.

A synopsis of the plot has also been released:

“Years after the Rescue Rangers TV series has ended, Chip and Dale must re-team to save a friend from Video Piracy”

A very odd premise but when more details are released perhaps a clearer picture will be revealed. It does however confirm that the film will indeed be canon with the television show. Zipper will also return but it is currently unknown if any other members of the team like Gadget or Monterey will appear, or other supporting characters like Tammy the Squirrel or even Clarice the Chipmunk. The film is scheduled to release in 2022 as a Disney Plus Exclusive.

Are you excited to see the daring duo return?
