Universal Orlando is apparently laying off 1,123 salaried employees according to the Orlando Sentinel. These employees are in the “creative division, theme parks and resorts” in a notice.
Here’s the break down of the layoffs:
- 373- Universal Creative Office
- 678 – Universal Studios Plaza offices
Hourly employees are not being impacted at this time. In fact a friend of mine recently told me that they recalled about 500 hour team members. I do worry about the hourly people getting hit again after the new year because the parks won’t be as busy.
The Orlando Sentinel said:
“The employees were or will be terminated anywhere from Aug. 24 to the end of the year, according to a letter sent by a human resources executive.
All employees have been notified and given at least 60 days’ notice of their dismissal, said the letter, dated Nov. 12.“
Scot LaFerté, Senior Vice President for human resources stated:
“As a full recovery will take time, the company has had to make very difficult decisions, including reducing some of its workforce.”
It just really sucks that this is happening right before the holidays.
