Disney is dumping yet another Pixar animated movie onto Disney Plus. Turning Red is coming to Disney Plus on March 11, 2022.

It would appear that Turning Red will skip a theatrical release altogether, and likely will not cost Disney Plus subscribers anything extra.

Turning Red, like Soul and Luca before it, seems to be another causality of the one-two punch of the pandemic and the escalation in the streaming wars.

From The Verge

Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution chairman Kareem Daniel was seen announcing theatrical releases for many 2021 movies in September, but in a statement about Turning Red, he now says, “Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.”

This decision will likely not sit well with Pixar employees who were already disheartened by Pixar movies effectively becoming the modern equivalent of direct-to-video or made-for-tv movies.

By comparison, Walt Disney Animation Studio’s latest releases Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto both received a theatrical release.

Turning Red is about a 13-year-old girl that “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited. Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.
