Super Smash Bros. is one of the biggest franchises in video gaming. A huge crossover fighting game retiring characters from all over video gaming culture. Originally starting in 1999, and focusing exclusively on Nintendo franchises, the series expanded to include 3rd party characters/content in 2008’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The series has collaborated with companies like Sega, Bandai Namco, Konami, Capcom, SNK, Square Enix, Microsoft and even Disney.

The final DLC fighter for the latest installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (AKA Super Smash Bros. Special) was the character Sora from the Kingdom Hearts franchise; A series co-created by Square Enix and Disney.

For years fans have wanted to see the iconic hero appear in the game and many had originally assumed Disney didn’t want that to happen. But apparently that wasn’t the case.

In a recent interview Kingdom Hearts co-creator, Tetuya Nomura, revealed that he himself was the reason as to why it was so difficult for Sora to appear in the game. He stated:

Obviously, I was very happy that we were able to have Sora make an appearance in Smash Bros. Ultimate. Most of the feedback when Sora was announced for Smash Bros. Ultimate was, ‘I can’t believe Disney okayed for him to be in this game.’ Behind the scenes, I was actually the one being very picky about his appearance in Smash Bros. Disney was the one that was like, ‘Go ahead! This is a great opportunity.’ I thought it would be tough to pull off because it might clash with the established lore in Kingdom Hearts and the Disney worlds, so it was an opportunity I had to consider very carefully. After seeing how happy everybody was in welcoming Sora to Smash Bros., I feel like the end result was really great.

Now that the truth is out, it sheds a very different light on the situation. Apparently Disney was very open to him appearing. But his creator was extremely nervous how his character would be portrayed and was very protective. It is good that he finally gave in since Sora was SSB’s most wanted 3rd party character.

What do you think? Was Nomura being too protective?
