Hasbro is reaching into the slightly forgotten past of Star Wars for inspiration. Four new figures are on the horizon, three Vintage Collection and one Black Series figure based on the short-lived cartoon called DROIDS.

C-3PO, R2-D2, and Boba Fett will appear in the vintage collection sporting their action figure-accurate color schemes. No shiny metallic for the droids, just flat and bright whites, yellows, and blues. Boba Fett will also be painted up in these matte colors for his 3.75″ figure and the 6″ version. All the figures appear to be repaints of previously released characters.

We spotted this Hasbro announcement over at Figures.com. These three figures will be Target exclusives. The pre-orders for both 3PO and R2 are sold out. For Boba Fett, both his Vintage Collection and Black Series figures are sold out, too.

From what I’ve seen of Target-only figures, you better show up when the doors open every day during the week, or else you’re just not going to get them. Good luck!

Power of the Force and DROIDS toylines did try to keep the Star Wars license afloat on store shelves after George Lucas decided not to press forward with more movies after Return of the Jedi. PotF did provide some unique and memorable toys. Those came in the form of non-movie-related vehicles. Though once the mid-1980s rolled around, the Star Wars brand went into semi-hibernation until the middle of the ’90s.

Where I lived during the ’80s, the DROIDS figures were not easy to find. I had 3PO and R2, but that was it. To be honest, I wasn’t at all interested in the cartoon. Without Han, Luke, and Leia, I could not get engaged in it as a kid.

The DROIDS tv-series was made by Nelvana, also known for several Saturday morning shows and the fantastic movie Rock-N-Rule. Nelvana was also behind the animated section of the 1979 Star Wars Holiday Special.

Boba Fett only appeared twice in Nelvana’s animated Star Wars productions: once in the Holiday Special and again in the DROIDS episode “A Race to the Finish.” It was a shame that the bounty hunter didn’t receive more multi-media attention, considering that he was growing in popularity in the ’90s. When the Original Trilogy was re-released in theatres, Boba Fett was so popular that he was inserted into A New Hope.

It’s weird to think that Fett has taken over forty years to get his own show or even a meaningful role in another series. Though, I am glad that it didn’t happen under George Lucas’s prequel-era mindset. Phew.
