Stan Lee’s Likeness Licensed To Marvel In Deal With POW! Entertainment

“Stan Lee” is perhaps one of if not the most recognized name in comics, next to names like Jack Kirby, Joe Simon and Steve Ditko. Born Stanley Martin Lieber, he is known for helping co-create some of Marvel Comic’s biggest named like Spider-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, The Fantastic 4, The X-Men and many more.

Stan became more well known outside of comics when he began making cameo appearances in various Marvel films, most notably in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every film people would look forward to whatever background character or bit part he would play.

Stan Lee sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 95 and his death was felt not only by the fans of Marvel, but throughout the entire comic book industry. Many figured the obvious, that there would be no more Stan Lee cameos in the MCU. But it appears that he will be making a port-mortem return.

It was announced that a deal has been struck between Genius Brands International and Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment allowing Marvel (and Disney) to use Stan Lee’s name and likeness for the next 20 years in film, television and theme parks.

The deal would allow Marvel to use archived footage and even CGI renders of his face, similar to the situation with Carrie Fisher appearing in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Genius Brands CEO Andy Heyward spoke about the deal:

It really ensures that Stan, through digital technology and archival footage and other forms, will live in the most important venue, the Marvel movies, and Disney theme parks. It’s a broad deal. The audience revered Stan, and if it’s done with taste and class, and respectful of who he was, uses of his likeness will be welcomed. He is a beloved personality, and long after you and I are gone, he will remain the essence of Marvel.”

This all honestly feels strange. Seeing that you can apparently own someone’s likeness when they’re deceased. Not to mention his last few days of life were filled with controversy where he was reportedly the victim of elder abuse.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to seeing Stan returning to the MCU? Or should he have been allowed to rest?
