SONY’s Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to defy the COVID-19 Lockdowns/Restrictions as the film breaks records and becomes the sixth highest grossing film of all time. It has passed the 2019 remake of The Lion King and the 2015 reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World and knocked 2019’s Frozen II out of the Top Ten. The film has so far accumulated $721+ Million domestically and $970.1 Million internationally, making a total of $1.69 Billion.

The continued success of the film can be attributed not only to the amount of fan service, with the inclusion of past versions of Spider-Man over the past 20 years, but also offering closure to multiple franchises that felt unfinished. It also gave a new start to the Tom Holland iteration of the character through a soft reboot. When Keven Feige said that Avengers: Endgame was the most ambitious crossover of all time, he probably never thought that SONY would do something in the same vein.
SONY must be glad that they didn’t sell the character back to Marvel/Disney as they see this as the perfect opportunity to launch their own shared universe of Spider-Man spinoff films.
Morbius is slated to release in April of this year with other films like Nightwatch, Black Cat, Prowler, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot and more possibly in the works. Those are along with sequels to the Tom Holland Spider-Man film, so they must be seeing dollar signs. Though they should be cautious as the last time they tried doing this it didn’t go that well.
The future looks bright for the web slinger and Tom Holland’s career as the young hero seems far from over.
