D23 News: Spaceship Earth To Be Refurbished Soon–Will it Have Character?

The long rumored refurbishment for Spaceship Earth was announced at D23 today.

Earlier in the day they unveiled two posters in the Disney Parks Pavilion. One showcasing the original Spaceship Earth and another one indicating a “new age” with the date of October 1, 2019 (the 37th Anniversary of Epcot.) I have to wonder if the 2019 date will be announced as the closing date.

According to the presentation the ride will remain a voyage through time but will focus on story telling uniting the human experience. Still worried about this, however, they seemed to indicate that it will mostly stay as it is. Technology, invention and communication is the current focus, so is that changing now or are they just calling “communication”  “storytelling” because it sounds more Disney?

It isn’t just me that is kind of questioning this.

This was after Bob Chapek stressed that they listen to customers and surveys.  Meanwhile, where’s the Dreamfinder cause I know that is one of the most requested changes?

But wait there’s more!

There will also be a new narration and musical score to “focus on the moments and ideas that define our story.”

Plus they are adding NEW scenes to focus on storytelling and I could be wrong but it seems they are going to slap that IP in there too!  They even had a clip showing what appears to be something that is from Moana.  During the panel they showed this while saying “We are also adding new scenes to reflect the universal nature of the human experience.”

Another thing they are adding that I’m torn on is a“story light” that leads through the attraction.

It’s cool and it’s probably a relatively in-expensive addition to make it seem cooler, but it almost feels controlled. It kind of feels like we are little kids again being led through a lesson and I don’t know if I like that. They claim it will “bring the entire experience to life in dynamic ways, giving each scene energy and beauty that ties the entire journey together.”  I hope so because it feels more like a less expensive way to make it appear more exciting while keeping guests focused on what they want. But I can let that slide if it’s amazing.

Bob Chapek said that “Spaceship Earth has stood for 37 years….there’s simply nothing else like it.” Then why are you changing it?  Update it, yes. Fix the ending, yes. But the other stuff…why?

Also changing is the exit. Now it will exit into “Dreamers Point” which is a garden area with a statue of Walt Disney.

Now the glowing pathways and trees make a bit more sense because it feels like the story light. There’s that synergy they keep talking about.

I don’t know. I have to see more. Change isn’t always bad, and they said that it was mostly being kept as is but I have a bad feeling about this. I hope it’s all okay and I’m wrong. I want it to be awesome because I love it.

Stay tuned, I am expecting the announcement that it is closing on October 1, 2019 because of those posters. We shall see!
