SONY released a brand new look at the upcoming Morbius film starring Jered Leto.

The sequence shows what is believed to be Michael Morbeus’ first transformation into the human-vampire hybrid. As he is being treated by Martine Bancroft (Adria Arjona) a guard walks in and as soon as Morbius transforms and seemingly kills him. More guards run in with guns and knock Martine to the ground, enraging Morbius. He then attacks and kills a number of the guards as they flee. He possesses powers such as increased speed, the ability to crawl on walls and briefly turn into a shadowy mist as he runs around. The scene ends with him turning back to normal as he looks in a mirror and sees that he is no longer frail.

The sequence evokes the feeling of a horror film. Imagine being trapped on a cargo ship with a vampire-like creature trying to kill you before the sun comes up. It’s really interesting to see a Marvel film go in this direction. Usually you’d expect something like this from Universal’s failed Dark Universe.

A new poster was also released to coincide with the sneak peak:

The film is already having people ask questions. How will this play into Venom and Spider-Man? Will this film redeem Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad? What other characters will we see appear in this film to connect with the other movies in this universe?

SONY’s increased dependence on Spider-Man can be emphasized on the amount of projects they have in the works based around the characters and universe on Peter Parker. Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character is so popular we’ll be seeing him for at least 3 more films. We will definitely see more solo films based on other characters in that universe.

Morbius is scheduled to release January 28th, 2022, which is an odd choice due to January/February films historically not doing well. We’ll see what potential future the character has when the film releases.
