Good news for all the MCU Spider-Man fans out there. It appears that Sony and Marvel have reached a new deal to bring Spider-Man 3 to the big screen after all. Ending a tense dispute that was going to see Spider-Man 3 removed from the MCU.
The film will star Tom Holland and will be set in the MCU, building off the events from the previous two films.
Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President made this announcement:
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Tom Holland is brilliant as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. I’m glad they reached a deal. Either way he was going to go where the Spider-Man IP went, but I’m really happy it could all be settled amicably.
It looks like a Win-Win for Sony and Marvel.
According to Deadline:
“Disney/Marvel would co-finance 25% of a third Homecoming movie for a 25% equity stake. The deal also calls for Spider-Man appearing in one more Disney/Marvel movie. This is also a big win for Sony here in continuing a series that will likely give it another $1 billion-plus grossing film. Additionally, the deal keeps intact the creative steering of Walt Disney Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige who led two of the best and most profitable fan pleasing pics in the Spidey film canon together grossing $2 billion worldwide.”
Spider-Man 3 will be added to the Phase 4 roster that includes: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder.
According to Comicbook.com:
“Following the third Spider-Man film, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker can appear in other Marvel Studios movies or Sony movies, though joint productions between the studios will not continue.”
So we will get more Tom Holland and that’s a win for everyone!
If I was going to be fair I would have to say that Sony is pivital to bringing the modern superhero film into being and they are just as invested and responsible for the Spider-Man franchise success. Plus Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was very good! I feel it needs to be noted!
The new Spider-Man 3 will release in theaters on July 16, 2021.
