Sneakerella Trailer Flops on YouTube

Disney released a plethora of information on upcoming shows and movies during their Disney+ Day (Investor Day) announcements last Friday. Included in the Disney+ line up was a movie called ‘Sneakerella.’

This gender bent take on Cinderella sees a “shop boy” who is really a designer, take his shot. The King in this one is Kira King, who is “Sneaker Royalty” and the glass slipper is, you guessed it, his designer sneakers.

Here is the synopsis:

“After falling in love with Kira King, the daughter of basketball star and sneaker tycoon Darius King, an aspirant Queens sneaker designer gains the confidence to pursue his dream of becoming a professional sneaker designer with the help of his best friend, Sami, and his Fairy Godfather.

Now the trailer has been released on YouTube and it has barely broken 113K views, which is not good for a Disney trailer that has been out for three days. Maybe it got lost in all the Marvel noise, or maybe people just have no interest in this movie.

To further illustrate that we can look at the current downvotes compared to upvotes (before YouTube takes downvotes down) and it’s about 4 to 1.

2.2K upvotes to 9.1K downvotes.

The comments aren’t much better:

Another reason why we still need the public dislike counter” (The most popular comment at 2.1K thumbs up. That’s almost as much as the entire trailer has for thumbs up interaction.)

this feels like a parody trailer, why is this real” (1.9K thumbs up)

This just screams out “How do you do Fellow kids?” energy” (1.3K thumbs up agreements)

This feels like a high budgeted disney channel movie” (1.4K thumbs up agreements)

When you try to adapt a story with a black cast but it just goes full stereotype

If this is what your idea of representation is, I don’t want it. 😂”

Disney executives, “what do kids like?” “Rap music?” Check “Tennis shoes?” Check “Ooh! Ooh…. Cinderella!” Yes! “Gentlemen, we have a winner!

People’s reaction to this trailer is why they are taking the dislike counter down. It’s bad for business, no other reason.

There were a great many comments either discussing YouTube removing the dislike button for this reason or talking about how it feels like it’s stereotyping or a parody.

It is not going well for Disney, at least with this Disney+ film and it won’t even be released until February 18th. Besides the dislike to like ratio on this, the fact that it has barely any views for a channel with over 5 millions subscribers, makes me think Disney has a lot of work here to get people to care about it let alone watch it.
