DVD company Shout! Factory announces that they will be releasing the 1978 made-for-tv movie based on the Marvel comic character Dr. Strange on BluRay just in time for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe there were multiple films that used characters from the vast and diverse Marvel Universe. From the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy, to the Wesley Snipes Blade Trilogy, to the two Nicholas Cage Ghost Rider films to Ang Lee Hulk film and so on. But there were many films that some people forget existed.

Of course film buffs are aware of the unreleased 1994 Fantastic 4 film and the 1986 Howard the Duck film. But there were some bizarre releases like the 1998 Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the 1990 Captain America, the 2005 Man-Thing and the 1989 Punisher. But perhaps the “strangest” of all is the 1978 Dr. Strange.

Dr. Strange was a made-for-tv film by NBC Television for the CBS channel. With he success of the 1977-79 The Amazing Spider-Man and 1977-82 The Incredible Hulk television shows the studio water to expand their lineup of super hero shows. But instead of characters like Thor or Captain America they chose a more bizarre character, that being Doctor Strange.

The film stared Peter Hooten as the titular doctor while Jessica Walter played Morgan Le Fay the sorceress. Other characters such as Clea Lake (Played by: Anne-Marie Martin) and Wong (Played by: Clyde Kusatsu) also appear. The film had a runtime of 93 minutes and aired during a two hour block.

The film overall did poorly in the ratings and director/writer/producer, Phillip DeGuere, was reportedly devastated. Due to this it was never picked up for a full series. However Stan Lee reportedly had a positive experience while working on the film along with shows like The Incredible Hulk. Had the film not run opposite to ABC’s Roots it may have done better.

Are you planning on picking up this bizarre Marvel film for your collection? Should Peter Hooten’s Doctor cameo in Multiverse of Madness?
