Shades of Green, the unique Walt Disney World hotel complex run by the United States Department of Defense, has unfurled its red, white, and blue décor for Memorial Day. The patriotic banners will be on display until Independence Day.
One of only five Armed Forces Recreation Centers, the complex is open to current and former military personnel, as well as their families. Located near the Polynesian Resort, the hotel is now accessible to the Magic Kingdom via walking path since the westward pathway has been connected. Crews worked last year to build the bridge between the Magic Kingdom and the Grand Floridan resort which allows for both the Polynesian and Shades of Green to have access. Be aware that the walk may be upwards of twenty minutes.
Shades of Green is likewise surrounded by quite a bit of greenspace in the manner of two PGA golf courses. If you’ve been pondering how to celebrate a veteran in your family, consider reserving a stay at Shades of Green in the future. Occupancy outside of the pandemic has historically been around 100% for the past many decades, so you’ll want to try for a reservation in significant advance. Not only does the hotel offer a number of great amenities, but it also provides transportation to Disney World theme parks, as well as the option to get Fastpasses once they (likely) return.
Don’t forget to watch the flag retreat at The Magic Kingdom, and make sure to let a cast member know about your veteran when entering the theme park. There’s a chance they may be selected to receive the flag in a touching ceremony that honors the sacrifices of those who elect to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States.
To all veterans reading this post, we salute you and wish you a meaningful Memorial Day Weekend. Whether you’re at Shades of Green on May 31st, 2021, whether you’re sitting at home, or if you’re out there going through a hard time, we want you to know that we appreciate your sacrifices for the country. And to families who have lost a loved-one in the act of service for the United States, you have our unending gratitude for the heroism of those you hold dear. This author remembers a family member who was a prisoner of war, and the pain he endured having watched his fellow soldiers die. We should all be very grateful for the things a few have endured so that most can be free.
We’re happy there are places like Shades of Green to welcome our service members and veterans on a vacation to Disney World. On this Memorial Day Weekend, we say “thank you”.
