Runner Is Almost Finished With Disneyland to Walt Disney World “Mouse-to-Mouse” Run

Don Muchow has almost completed his over 2,700 mile run from Disneyland to Walt Disney World. It’s taken him longer than the estimated 98 days because the pandemic came in and forced him to stop last year. Even so, he’s set to reach Walt Disney World on April 5, 2021.

Muchow is a health care worker, turned runner, from Plano Texas. The 59 year old decided to do the run from the west coast Disney park to the east coast Disney park, to show that those with Type 1 diabetes can still “dream big, despite the very real 24/7 challenges and risks.”

He does the running while his wife Leslie Nolen drives the support fan. The plan was to complete the trek in 98 days, with eight days off and 90 days of running.

A run over a year in the making

Mr. Muchow’s journey began over a year ago when he started in Newport Beach on February 1, 2020, after he dipped his toe into the Pacific Ocean. Then he ran the 14 miles to Disneyland and headed East towards Walt Disney World.  The original plan was to reach the east coast park around May 4th.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year and caused him to change up his plans. According to the OC Register, Muchow and his wife realized something was amiss when they got to Carlsbad, New Mexico.  They stopped at a Costco to restock their supplies and all the water was gone, lines were long, and the Disney parks shut down.

Being someone with Type 1 Diabetes, Muchow knew he was higher risk and didn’t want to put himself or others in danger.  He told the OC Register:

We didn’t want to give or get COVID, especially because folks with Type 1 have a greater risk of developing severe COVID. I also thought it would be selfish to risk an injury that might require medical care when our healthcare folks and hospitals were so overwhelmed by life-and-death situations.

This put the Mouse-to-Mouse run on hold in March 2020, at the 1,260 mile mark in Texas. Then they went home and waited. Starting back up again in October 2020, but forced to pause again when COVID-19 cases were spiking again.

Finally, after almost a year, Mr. Muchow resumed his run on March 2, 2021 and now he’s just a few of days away from the finish. His plan is to stop briefly in Walt Disney World and then head over to Melbourne, Florida to put his toe into the Atlantic Ocean. His run should be completed on April 7th.

Then he plans on returning to Wald Disney World to visit the Magic Kingdom and ride “It’s a Small World.” To which I say, “You have excellent taste sir!”

I look forward to hearing that he has completed the journey!  If you see him on his way or at the Magic Kingdom, make sure to say “Hello.”
