We have yet another rumor, this one coming from WDWMagic, there is talk that the Little Mermaid stage show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios might not come back online when the parks open. Again, this is just a rumor, but it does tie in with other rumors we were hearing about the show closing down for another attraction in that show building.
The Voyage of the Little Mermaid has been running since 1992 and as much as I still appreciate the black light effects and how the theater rains, its really overdue for replacement.
Previously we had heard rumors about Monster Inc. closing at Walt Disney World and moving to one of the buildings in the courtyard area or some other Pixar property having an attraction added there, again that was all rumor. But the idea of the show being closed and replaced has been thrown around several times.
In fact the source of this rumor Literally Nobody posted this recently on WDWMagic:
“I mentioned a few months back that super high resolution pictures of the props from Voyage of the Little Mermaid we taken for archival purposes to prepare for the eventual closure. Just found out from the same source the plan is to not open it again once Hollywood Studios re-opens. It is done.
Sad that some cast members won’t be rehired for it, but the writing has been on the wall for a bit I think.”
If Disney wanted to close things down, now would be the time to do it as it would be easier to do without the guests and cast members there. I hope they would try to relocate the displaced cast members.
Even thought it’s just hearsay at this point, I’ve heard some other sources mention that it could be replaced. I am worried that since Disney has taken such a financial hit that they will start cutting and we will get an empty space for several years or they will just cheap out and make it some upcharged dessert / night-time show space or something like that. I expect many more upcharges and charges to occur when the parks do reopen.
Reading the comments over there, I’m not the only one who thinks it’s something they would do.
We shall see what happens as only time will tell.
