PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FOLLOWING REPORT IS A RUMOR AND MUST BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT

This past August a YouTube personality known as Maximilian Dood made a rallying cry in a video to try and help bring back the classic Arcade Fighting Game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 onto modern consoles. Maximilian Dood is one of the most well known figures in the fighting game community, he has been on YouTube for over a decade and has accumulated over 1 Million Subscribers. Known not only for his content but also the relationships he has made with developers of fighting games from across the world and is considered the voice of the casual FGC.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was a 3v3 fighting game developed by Capcom and released in the arcade in 2000. The game brings together 56 characters from across both companies in intense 3v3 team fights and developing a large tournament following. The game was released on the PS2, Xbox and Dreamcast. The game later got an HD Re-Release for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 but was de-listed in 2012 due to Disney taking full ownership of Marvel. Since then the game has been unavailable to buy on any current platform.

In August he released a video calling for Marvel and Capcom to come together and re-release the game on modern consoles with the #FreeMvC2 hashtag on twitter. The hashtag spread like wildfire in the FG community and even got the attention of notable influencers like Michael B. Jordan and even appearing on a poster in AEW Dynamite on TNT.

This was not Max’ first time doing this, he also created the #BringBackKI trend which didn’t have as much success.

A recent repost suggests that both Disney and Capcom have noticed this trend and are currently in the discussion phases of possibly releasing the game on Modern Consoles. The biggest obstacles of course involve licensing fees, which some worry might be higher than either company might be willing to pay.

Only time will tell if a deal cane be made and how the game will be released. If a deal is made then we could possibly see the game release standalone or perhaps in a “Marvel vs. Capcom Collection” with other games in the series like X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom be included in the re-release as well.

Would you like to see this classic game resurface for modern audiences?
