REVIEW: Shrimp Tacos at the ABC Commissary in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

When speaking about food options at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the past, it was possibly disheartening. Nevertheless, with the addition of some new lands, the counter service options have improved. One of the standard dining options to ridicule previously was ABC Commissary. The food at this location has been average at best. Often when they find a menu item that works, they modify it and move it to another location.

I was suspicious when this location reopened about the food quality. Like many places, the menu has been reduced in size. At this point in time, there is not a horrible entrée on the menu. Now, I would not go out of my way to order the salad or chicken sandwich. Yet, reports are improved quality over the “bad ol’ days.”

The current stars in my opinion are the Shrimp Tacos there. It is difficult to think of this bland restaurant having good tacos, but it is true. For $12.99, you get sautéed shrimp on flour tortillas topped with cabbage slaw, chipotle-mayo, and mango salsa. This also comes with rice and beans topped with queso fresco. For the record, there is also a pork version taco but cannot recommend it as much.

The Shrimp Tacos are seen as spicy by Orlando area theme park standards. Personally, I would not see it is as spicy since it is a taco after all. If you are looking for a Tex-Mex style taco, then this is not a good choice.

If you are looking for something to make you think you ordered from a taco truck on a beach in California or maybe the Caribbean, then this is the taste for you. I prefer Tex-Mex or Korean style tacos, but these are worth your money. The rice is adequate, but the black beans are a nice touch with this dish. I wish other theme park quick service places offered this quality of a side with their tacos.

For $12.99 in a theme park, the portion size is nice. The adequate indoor seating helps at this location. If you have a soft drink addiction, like me, this place offers free refills. These may not be the best tacos in town. Still, the value is high. If you want to enjoy “Taco Tuesday” or any other made-up taco holiday, this is a good option.
