Review: Peanut Cake Doughnut at Voodoo Doughnut

If you have read some of my reviews of doughnuts and other sugary treats, then you might be aware of my enjoyment of peanuts and peanut butter. For example, my current favorite doughnut comes from Everglazed at Disney Springs, Peanut Butter Explosion.  Even though it costs $6.75, I would still buy it over and over. With all apologies to Voodoo Doughnut, your peanut butter and peanut options fail to meet that standard.

However, what if you do not want to spend over $7 with tax for a doughnut?

Voodoo provides several more cost-effective options that provide that peanut flavor. The Memphis Mafia fritter offers good peanut butter and peanut flavor but also has banana flavoring. The Chuckles raised yeast doughnut provides some peanut flavor also. However, the most bang for your buck peanut flavored doughnut goes by the obvious name “Peanut Cake” doughnut.

As the name states, this cake doughnut features peanuts. If you like peanuts, you will find plenty on top of this doughnut. The best part of this simple doughnut involves the price point. This doughnut costs $1.75. That makes good value for a theme park snack or quick breakfast. The menu description reads “plain cake doughnut with chocolate frosting and peanuts.” Sounds simple to me.

In fact, this doughnut offers a simple taste. The peanut flavor shines well since the doughnut topping features peanuts. The light chocolate frosting works well to balance the cake doughnut and peanuts. I would have preferred a better quality of peanut. These tasted good but not great. I suspect the peanuts faced the same fate as many toppings at Voodoo Doughnut. Toppings seem to go stale quickly here. If Voodoo Doughnut could remedy that issue, this place could be argued to offer the best doughnut in area. Until then, these doughnuts are good for theme park doughnuts. This “Peanut Cake” one deserves consideration for a peanut lover. However, do not expect super-star quality. Of course, you are not paying super-star price either.

As always, eat like you mean it!
