Review: Old Fashioned Buttermilk Bar at Voodoo Doughnut Orlando

Though not everyone agrees, Voodoo Doughnut at Universal Orlando CityWalk offers some excellent themed doughnuts. In fairness, the Orlando area offers some excellent doughnut shops. The key advantage Voodoo Doughnut possesses centers around their location. Based on the structure of Universal Orlando Resort, almost every guest walks near the pink colored building offering tasty sugary treats. People get beckoned towards the light of doughnuts almost without knowing why. In terms of doughnuts, if you build it, they will come, Ray.

I understand that some people dislike extravagant doughnuts. They claim to dislike bacon on their maple bars. Also, they claim toppings and frosting on their doughnuts do not appeal to them. They desire traditional cake or basic raised yeast glazed doughnuts. Maybe you are one of those people. Perhaps, you want a doughnut but not ready for cream filling or sugar overload.

Fortunately, Voodoo Doughnuts offer some less elaborate bakery items. A popular one is the “Old Fashioned Buttermilk Bar.” This cost only $1.70. By theme park doughnut pricing, that rates as a bargain. Not to be “captain obvious”, but the name says it all. This buttermilk-based bakery item comes with a traditional sugary glaze.

So why else should one consider this treat?

The portion size merits consideration. Also, though the concept remains simple, the execution by Voodoo Doughnut of this treat exceeds standard expectations. If you like that higher fat buttermilk/sour cream like taste with a reasonable amount of sugar, this doughnut could make a light breakfast before hitting the theme parks.

Moreover, if you think one doughnut will not be filling enough, you could order this one as your second doughnut to balance it out. For example, maybe you order this one and a “Portland Cream.” Since the Portland Crème provides a solid sugar punch, the buttermilk bar style doughnut could balance that out.

Whatever your style of doughnut preference, Voodoo Doughnut offers something to satisfy that sweet tooth.  I know a doughnut expert I trust uses this as his go-to snack when he just needs a little sugar to motivate him. For less extreme doughnut people, this doughnut deserves a look.

As always, eat like you mean it!
