The pumpkin spice season is in full force since October has arrived. I was surprised that the dominant force in seasonal treats at Universal Orlando had not offered one yet. That changed recently with a mobile exclusive pumpkin spice donut at Voodoo Doughnut. I was concerned that it was mobile exclusive but more on that later.

This Pumpkin Spice donut is worth trying. Fortunately, a colleague of mine, split one of these with me since he was trying several sugary treats that day. The online menu describes this donut as pumpkin spice cake doughnut with a buttercream cream cheese dollop, topped with sprinkles and a dash of pumpkin spice. I am not a fan of pumpkin spice myself, but I understand the obsession.

Even for me, this item is worth your time. The cake doughnut portion was good but not too dense. The buttercream cream cheese was a nice touch but I’m not sure it helps this donut. My perspective may have been based on splitting a donut though.

The overall flavor of this donut was pleasant. There were some sprinkles on top which I enjoy so that scored points with me. This donut costs $2.90 before any discounts so not a bad theme park resort value.

Remember, I mentioned mobile order as a concern. Universal Orlando does not have a solid track record with mobile food ordering system. The system was so poor that it was basically eliminated this summer. Slowly, it has been brought back at certain locations.

I went back to Voodoo Doughnut to do a taste comparison getting this donut and a Cinnamon Sugar cake donut for a better review. I used the mobile ordering system. The process on the app was smoother than even the best days back in April/May 2021. I mobile ordered. The system confirmed my order. After 24 minutes, the app system notified me that my order was ready. I went to Voodoo Doughnut to the mobile pickup area. For the record, there is no sign indicating where to go so can imagine this being a problem during busier hours. The previous mobile pickup cart outside this location is no longer there.

I was  told politely by a team member that the mobile order Pumpkin Spice doughnut was not available. Then, I was asked to pick something else. Since i just wanted that donut, I elected not to do that. The mobile order system let me down again. Maybe it does not like me or maybe it still needs a better platform.

The good news is this doughnut is a decent value and taste for pumpkin spice person. Voodoo does traditionally struggle when new doughnuts are made available. I suspect this mobile order problem will not happen to you unless you order during busy hours. However, the mobile ordering system at Universal Orlando needs to coordinate with these food locations more effectively. If you are willing to play mobile order roulette, this donut may be a great payoff for you.
