Review: Eight Mile Cake Doughnut from Voodoo Doughnut Orlando

Maybe because of the way I am, I find doughnuts fascinating. Of course, at Universal Orlando, Homer Simpson would agree. If you catch Homer on the right day, he might sing for a moment about doughnuts. Who knew that Voodoo Doughnut offered nine different types of plain cake doughnuts?

I confidently confess you might lose yourself in these type doughnuts here. I have been accused of being a “Stan” for Voodoo Doughnut before. So, let me write or sing for a moment about certain plain cake doughnuts at Voodoo Doughnut. After all, who knew a plain cake doughnut could offer so much flavor.

The doughnut for review today would proclaim “My name is…” Eight Mile Cake Doughnut. The creators of these doughnuts wanted guests to know it was the real slim shady. If my overt use of Eminem song titles did not annoy you too much, then you can see to some extent today’s doughnut offers a homage to Eminem.

The Eight Mile Cake Doughnut costs $2.75. As the category indicates, the base of this is a plain cake doughnut. In this case, the term plain cake fits. Voodoo Doughnut uses that term loosely as seen by the Blueberry Cake Doughnut with blueberry inclusions in the doughnut. Still, the foundation of these doughnuts comes from a well-prepared cake doughnut.

Not to read too much into the doughnut theme, but the Eminem inspired doughnut features vanilla frosting. On top of the frosting, numerous mini-M&M candies reside.

Now that we have completed the discussion of doughnut’s inspiration and composition, how does it taste?

I prefer raised yeast doughnuts to cake ones. The few times I have enjoyed this doughnut, the cake portion offered a good base with solid taste. The vanilla frosting works fine. Yet, the frosting mostly functions as glue to keep the candy on top. For this doughnut to be successful, the candy needs to shine.

However, Voodoo Doughnut struggles to keep their toppings from drying out. Good news, the candy on this one avoids that issue when I have eaten one of these. Bad news, the candy tastes merely adequate for this price point.

If you are looking for a doughnut here but not brave enough for a “Voodoo Doll” for example, these cake doughnuts provide some creativity and flavor. In my opinion, I would use the $2.75 on one of the better doughnuts here. As always, eat like you mean it!
