PJ Masks: Parent Viewer Thoughts and Questions

I am a mother of two children aged 7 and 3, so that means I watch a lot of kid shows on Disney+. My 3 year old son is currently obsessed with PJ Masks – my 7 year old tolerates it because she’s a great big sister.

I write this article in jest, but I have some serious questions about this show. I will now lay them out for you. I know this show is a fiction, but I just have some thoughts.

  1. Where are these kids’ parents?

The whole premise of the show is that these kids are heroes that “go into the night to save the day.” They fight villains of the night, so that all the adults and children can have great days. There are adults on the show. The teacher and other clumsy adults they get caught up in the shenanigans of the nighttime villains – who are all children themselves.

I feel like a lot of kids’ television shows have parents or some sort of guardian readily accessible. For example, Sofia the First had her mom who married the King of Enchancia making her a Princess, Elena’s of Avalor has her grandmother, Luisa due to her parents’ death, among others. However, I haven’t seen nary of mention of the PJ Mask parents. Do they know their kids are masquerading around the city at all hours of the night? I just watched an episode where Greg, Gekko, was awake at 2:12am. I guess we all snuck out in our teens and to see if Santa came, but these are like elementary school children parading around town all night.

2. How do they fund their technology?

These kids have a headquarters (HQ) downtown that is three stories tall that apparently no one notices. This HQ is a fully functioning space shuttle that takes these kids to the moon and back in enough time to be home for breakfast. They have moon rovers, land and sea vehicles, and gadgets galore. These kids are stacked with all kinds of Batman type tech. Their suits of armor are powered by some sort of amulet that gives them these animal powers. There’s Owlette (Amaya) who had bird like powers with strong wind gusts and feather force fields, Gekko (Greg) with super strength, camouflage abilities, and can climb walls, and Catboy (Connor) who can shoot cat stripes, fur balls, and has super hearing and super speed. But, where do they get the money for all the sweet tech? Do they have rich parents that we know nothing about? Do they have a mysterious benefactor who is loaded and has a special place for kid heroes? It’s just not said, and these kids have a space shuttle. Some countries don’t even have that.

3. Where do all these kid villains and other heroes come from?

There are kid heroes and villains that no one else in town seem to hear when they are messing with the town at night. No adult in this town works at night or can hear the noises and tomfoolery caused by these villains and the heroes that save the town. I need the secret to their blissful sleep as not to be awoken by the loud noise of thundering foot steps, robot battles, and just the general vrooming of their vehicles and their screaming. One of the villains comes from the moon with moon crystal to zap various foes and objects to her whim. Why always come back to this specific locale? Aren’t there other places to steal things? If your plans get foiled by the same heroes each time, wouldn’t you just move on to where they weren’t?

Just thinking aloud here. It’s a great show for kids. Both of my kids enjoy it, and there really isn’t anything questionable. It also allows for my 7 year old to not watch ridiculous YouTube videos of kids opening toys or people playing video games.

If you’ve read this far, thank you for going on this journey with me. Again, all of this was in jest, and yes, I know it’s a kid show. Just watch some kids shows with adult glasses on, and you’ll see that you’re left with questions that cannot be answered.
