So a few days ago we posted a story about how the rumor is that Disney is eyeing Zac Efron as a young Jack Sparrow for a Pirates of the Caribbean project.
Now the rumors are once again back to a new female lead for the franchise.
This time the speculation focuses on Emma Watson and Karen Gillan.
Which is funny because they were in the movie The Circle together (hence the featured image.)
Now Karen Gillan was mentioned before, if the stories about using Redd the Pirate were true, she would be a solid choice. Her background in action films like the Jumanji franchise or the MCU would also make her a solid choice.
Emma Watson is okay, and she is a popular actress, but she always seems stiff to me, and I’m trying to picture her in a role like this one and I just can’t see it.
How would Pirates of the Caribbean do without Jack?
Honestly, I can’t see the franchise doing well without Captain Jack Sparrow, and Johnny Depp in particular. I know there’s more to it than that character, but it’s so ingrained in the film versions of this IP, it’s going to be a very hard sell to the audience.
Disney pushed it as far as to put Captain Jack Sparrow into the actual attraction at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. So they have been making the character a figurehead for the franchise.
Disney should just move on.
What about Disney+?
The current rumors have Disney+ as an option for the franchise.
I do agree that if they want to try a reboot or relaunch a Disney+ series with a young Jack Sparrow, could possibly give them another angle to work from. A female lead could be brought in to play opposite Jack in a series based project and then, after establishing her, make her the new focus. And who knows, maybe that’s what they are looking at right now.
The rumor of the female pirate being Redd is probably likely given Disney’s push for “synergy.” I’m sure that was the plan from the moment they changed that attraction scene out of nowhere. I don’t want to be cynical, but I’ve been doing this a long time and this seems exactly like something they would to push a new character forward. We already saw them put Jack in to synergize the ride with the films.
Either way, it’s all speculation and rumor at this point. Nothing official has been announced other than we have the script being written Chernobyl series creator Craig Mazin and screenwriter Terry Rossio, who worked on the original movie series.
Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
