Actor Owen Wilson, known for voicing Lightning McQueen in the Pixar Cars franchise and for playing Mobius in the Disney Plus Marvel series Loki, has been cast in the upcoming Haunted Mansion Reboot film, along with actress Rosario Dawson, known for playing Claire Tempel in the Netflix Marvel shows and Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian.
The reboot of the Haunted Mansion is one of the number of movies based on rides that Disney has been going with as of late. The recent Jungle Cruise movie starring Dwayne Johnson did relatively well with critics, and this film is set to follow in its footsteps.
No details have been given as of yet to who or what Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson will be playing in the film. They could be ghosts, singing busts or even talking animals, anything can happen when ghosts haunt a mid-1800s mansion.
The story will follow a family as they visit an abandoned mansion. Things seem normal at first, but slowly they realize that they are in the middle of a place so haunted the Ghostbusters would probably say “call someone else”. The setup does sound relatively similar to the 2004 film starring Eddie Murphy, which people will definitely compare this to.
We do know that the following ghost characters are rumored to appear:
- “William Gracey and his wife are a “a wealthy Creole couple in their early 30s” and “free people of color from 19th century New Orleans.”
- The Mariner
- The Butler
- Dueling Ghosts
- The Bride “Constance” but they may change her name, who knows.
- Singing Busts (Who knows if they sing in the film)
- Stretching Room portrait characters as ghosts
The film will be directed by Justin Simien, known for Dear White People and written by Katie Dippold who also wrote the 2006 Ghostbusters reboot. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich who produced the 2019 Live-Action Aladdin will also produce this adaptation. So we’ll have to wait and see what the “quality” of the film will be.
Filming begins this October with a 2022 Planned release date. It is unknown if it will be a Disney Plus Exclusive or if it will release Theatrically as well.
