In our capitalistic society, people grow weary of being told something is new and improved. Cynically, people wonder what was wrong with the old product. Sometimes, we just want the original version. Gideon’s Bakehouse proudly calls one of their cookies the “Original Chocolate Chip Cookie.” The legend of Gideon’s Bakehouse revolves around the recipe for this cookie.
In fact, in Gideon’s Bakehouse’s own marketing, they refer to this cookie as the foundation of their company. They make a comparison to this cookie being the first child. They claim the current recipe for this cookie took 15 years to perfect. Like many of the cookies that evolved after it, this cookie comes topped with lots of chips. Being the original chocolate chip cookie, the mound of chocolate chips on top makes the type of cookie clear. The traditional vanilla flavoring within the cookie provides a base for all those chips. Gideon’s Bakehouse claims the texture will trick you into thinking you are eating cookie dough (but baked)
How did this cookie perform in taste tests? Well, several guests tasted and felt the claim of cookie dough flavor. Most guests enjoyed the pile of chocolate chips on top of this cookie. If you are looking for a solid cookie, this version meets that desire easily. The cookie base reaches the standard expected at this place.
In fairness, I would not consider this to be one of the better cookies at Gideon’s Bakehouse. In this case, the original stands the test of time. However, the new kids on the block do most things better than the original. Of the people I shared cookies with and consulted, almost all agree that this cookie ranks in the middle of the options at Gideon’s Bakehouse.
Is this cookie worth your time? I would probably say yes. Though this may not be the best. This cookie comes from a place which develops a long queue almost every day. People are not standing in line for bad cookies. Should you join them? That remains your decision. However, I doubt you will be truly disappointed with anything you get from this place. As always, eat like you mean it!
