‘New Mutants’ Did About $750K in Thursday’s Preview Opening

‘New Mutants’ has hit the box office and according to Comicbook.com they brought in about $750K on the Thursday “premier night.”

Helping the film is the fact that there is very little competition, but working against the film is bad weather and the pandemic. Plus it didn’t open in some of the larger markets like California and New York, as well as a few other states and larger cities.

I think the constant delays for the past couple years and the fact that some thought it had already been released played into the lower number as well.

It isn’t the worst preview night ever, but it’s far from the best. The media keeps pulling out movies that were obscure or not popular in 2019 and are basically saying “New Mutants did better than these.” So it’s better than the low bar set last year. Except they weren’t part of the X-Men franchise like this one is.

So far the film is not scoring super well with critics or audiences either. Currently on Rotten Tomatoes it’s sitting at 29% critical score and 56% audience score.

A lot of people were surprised they still pushed the theatrical release for this one over ‘Mulan” instead of just putting it directly onto Disney+. Makes me wonder if there were stipulations for a theatrical release on it when they got it from Fox. My husband wonders if they put this film as a “Premier Access” title and it wasn’t good (as the reviews currently indicate) if it would “poison the well” for other “Premier Access” titles moving forward. Who knows. The wheels behind the mouse are complicated and confusing.

Here’s a recent trailer if you want to get an idea about the film:

If you are interested, the film is out in theaters today, where theaters are allowed to be open. Make sure you check with your theater for times and for their current pandemic safety procedures and guidelines.
